Keeping Your Braces in Shape

Posted .

To ensure optimal functionality, your braces need to be cared for well. Do you know how to protect and keep your braces clean?

Braces usually contain metal brackets and wires, but the metal is not designed to protect your mouth. If your mouth is ever at risk, so are your braces. This includes playing contact sports or participating in high-risk activities. You’ll want to wear a mouth guard or face mask when needed. You’ll also want to avoid chewy or sticky foods that can easily get lodged or wedged between your braces and teeth.

If the wires or brackets of your braces should ever fail due to improper use, please do not attempt to fix or repair them. Instead, cover the broken areas with orthodontic wax and seek orthodontic treatment at Shenandoah Valley Orthodontics immediately.

To keep your braces clean, please brush and floss your teeth every day. If flossing is impossible, you can switch to an alternative interdental tool such as a water flosser. If you have a retainer, always make sure to clean it often to keep it free of bacteria and contamination.
