Tips for Making Flossing Easier When You Have Braces

Posted .

If you’re one who struggles to floss when you’re aligning your smile with braces, you’re not alone. Many people have a hard time properly flossing their teeth and gums during their orthodontic journey because their appliance seems to get in the way. This leads to ignoring the dental floss for days. Although it can be inconvenient to floss when you have braces, it’s still important to clean the crevices of the smile. Our orthodontists, Dr. Damon W. DeArment, are happy to help make flossing easier by giving you the following tips:

-Use waxed floss: Waxed floss is handy because it’s easier to maneuver compared to other types of floss. The waxy coating helps the floss slide into smaller and tighter spaces of the smile and braces without breaking easily.

-Use floss threaders: Floss threaders help you thread the floss under the wires easily. This can take time off your flossing routine and help you avoid the frustrations of threading the floss yourself. Feel free to use this loop-shaped tool whenever possible!

-Use a water flosser: A water flosser can wash your teeth, gums and braces properly and conveniently. The tip of the flosser wand will spray water into the spaces between the teeth and along the gumline to remove food particles, plaque and bacteria from the area. You don’t even need to use floss to clean your smile!
